Promotion & Education


The Downtown Management District understands the importance of promoting downtown El Paso to the public at large. The downtown area has many attributes that are important to economic recruitment, quality of life and the community in general. Any downtown is a reflection upon how a community sees itself. El Paso is no different. The DMD Board focuses on programs that work to help bring to the forefront the value of downtown to the rest of the community. This is done in several ways:

# Involvement with our youth programs such as Building Imaginations;

For six years School Children from 2nd to 5th grade have been brought together to build a city with Lego blocks under the guidance of professionals.

# Art Contents for Children;

In the summer of 1999 High School Art Students entered into a contest sponsored by the DMD to design a logo and create a slogan for DMD Clean up equipment.

In October of 2001 elementary school students entered into a DMD contest which asked them to draw their idea of downtown El Paso.

In June of 2005 art students from the Lydia Patterson Institute participated in an educational project where they painted their rendition, based on local history, of the 100 years of History that has passed before the 1910 Howard Clock located in San Jacinto Plaza in downtown El Paso.

# Public Art Committee and the Mural Project;

Local artist have participated in the creation of murals that are painted on unsightly roll down security doors. The art depicted in the murals have a historical relationship to the area that they are located within.

In 2004 the 1st ever Downtown Photo Contest was held and opened to Students, lay persons and professionals.

# Business Awareness projects;

Committees from the DMD have created several flyers and pamphlets published in the English, Spanish and Korean languages educating business operators in the values of recycling, trash pickup and keeping a clean environment.

Committees have played host for educational seminars geared to businesses and employers on subjects such as finances, safety and business resources available to businesses.

The DMD regularly partners with organizations such as the Small Business Administration to bring education and awareness to businesses and employers.

# Walking Tour of Downtown;

The DMD partnered with the Historical Society and the Convention and Visitors Bureau and provided signage for the downtown walking tour.

# Downtown promotion projects such as;

# National Flag Program, displaying 50 US Flags in San Jacinto Park & Aztec Calendar Park in downtown.

# TV ads promoting downtown El Paso.

# Street Guide Map of Downtown;

The DMD partnered with Sun Metro, our local Mass Transit Authority to provided a map for shoppers, bus riders and tourist to enjoy their shopping experience in downtown.

# 3 Page Insert in Downtown Magazine, "the El Pasoan";

The CBA Staff provides articles of interest and promotions for the DMD for downtown news.
