Sanitation Program
The DMD employees, via contract with West Texas Community Supervision and Corrections Department, 3 Field Foreman and 1 Field Supervisor to oversee cleanliness services. The labor comes from probationers assigned community hours by the local courts. These crews focus on the following areas: 1) Graffiti removal using: multimedia steam and pressure equipment. Hotsy steam and pressure equipment. Painting by hand using color-matching equipment. 2) Power washing sidewalks, alleyways and Sun Metro bus stop areas. 3) Trash removal and cardboard recycling program. 4) Cleanup services, at no charge, for events held in the District by non-profits with a community and downtown benefit focus. 5) Cleaning and refurbishing of Historical Markers The Main Street Banner Program Sanitation Committee Operations are monitored by the Sanitation Committee whose members consist of representatives from the City of El Paso's Solid Waste Management Department, Building Services Department, and Police Department.. The committee also has representatives from DMD Board, DMD Crews, City-County Health Unit, the Convention Center, TM Border Industries and El Paso Disposal. A Vice President of the DMD chairs the Committee. The committee considers issues as they pertain to cleaning downtown El Paso and develop strategies, both short and long range, to address these issues. The committee develops educational seminars and programs to educate business operators, the general public and youth. The committee has developed a three prong strategy to the cleaning of downtown: I. Application of resources, (staff and equipment). II. Education. III. Enforcement. The committee makes recommendations to the Board of Directors of the DMD for budget considerations. FY 2005-2006 DMD Program activity and savings to taxpayers: $693,772.00 The table below is the year end totals for fiscal year 2005 to 2006. $10.20 hourly rate is the minimum entry level with benefits for a laborer from Solid Waste Management.
